RANK STRUCTURE:
The State of Heraklea is a multi-stellar nation ruled by constitutional stratocracy.  As a result of the military society that the modern state has become, the entire population exists within a rank structure.  At the top of society and the height of political power are the flag officers.  Beneath them are the non-flag commisioned and warrant officers, then senior non-coms, junior noncoms, and junior rates (the term “rate” is used in place of where most states would use the term “enlisted” as no one enlists in the system).  The system of warrant officers run parallel with non-flag officers up to the rank of captain.  The rank system of the state goes as follows:

Rating System:

The "Rates," Heraklean citizens of equivalent rank to "enlisted" in foreign militaries or "working class" in the civilian sectors, are divided into a variety of job specialties called "ratings."  Not every rate has a rating, but a rating is required to advance past "Leading Rate" and become a non-commissioned officer.  The following is a list of ratings of the State of Heraklea:

Uniforms of Heraklea:

There are number of uniforms in use in Heraklea.

Dress Reds (Parade Dress, Mess Dress, Peacocks):
A long sleeved red coat with gold buttons and a black standing collar, black pants, black belt with gold buckle, white gloves, black jackboots and socks and white undershirt.  Sword with black scabbard is worn.  A black tricorn with white trim is worn by R-01 through R-07; a black tricorn with gold trim and white feathering is worn by R-08 through R-14; a black bicorn with gold trim worn side to side is worn by O-C through O-04; a black bicorn with red trim worn side to side is worn by W-C through W-04; a black bicorn with gold trim and white feathering worn side to side is worn by O-05 through O-08; a black bicorn with red trim and white feathering worn side to side is worn by W-05 through W-07; a large black bicorn with gold trim and white feathering worn front to back is worn by O-9 through O-16.  All earned medals, ribbons, badges, sashes, aiguillettes and the two senior most warfare devices are worn.  White pants may be substituted for black.  A long sleeved red tail coat with gold buttons and black standing collar may be substituted for the coat.  Black dress shoes may be substituted for jackboots.  A black cape with red reverse may be worn.
Dress Reds are authorized for parades, high affairs of state, Honor Guardsmen standing guard watch at Kirburg Castle and any Honor Guardsmen attached to the Chief of State.

Full Dress Blacks:
A long sleeved black coat (red trimmed for rates) with standing collar, black pants, black belt with silver buckle, black jackboots and socks, white undershirt and black peaked cap.  Medals, ribbons, badges and two senior most warfare devices are worn.  White or black gloves, sword with black scabbard, sashes and aguillettes are optional.  White peaked cap can be substituted for black.  Black dress shoes may be substituted for jackboots.  A black great coat or pea coat may be worn.
Full Dress Blacks are authorized for work, leave and liberty.

Full Dress Whites:
A long sleeved white coat with standing collar, white pants, white belt with silver buckle, black jackboots and socks, white undershirt and white peaked cap.  Medals, ribbons, badges and two senior most warfare devices are worn.  White gloves, sword with black scabbard, sashes and aguillettes are optional.  Black pants and belt can be substituted for white.  Black dress shoes, white jackboots or white dress shoes may be substituted for black jackboots.  A black or white great coat or pea coat may be worn.  A white scabbard may be substituted for black with white pants.

Service Dress Blacks:

A short sleeved white shirt, white pants with white belt with silver buckle, black jackboots, white undershirt and white peaked cap.  Ribbons, badges and two senior most warfare devices are worn.  Sword with black scabbard and aguilletes are optional.  White knee shorts may be substituted for white pant.  Black dress shoes, white jackboots or white dress shoes may be substituted for black jackboots.  A black or white great coat may be worn.  A white scabbard may be substituted for black.
Summer Dress Whites are authorized for work in hot climates, leave and liberty.

Service Uniform:
A short sleeved khaki shirt, black pants with black belt with silver buckle, black jackboots and socks with black peaked cap.  Ribbons, badges and two senior most warfare devices are worn.  Aguillettes are optional.  Black garrison cap can be substituted for the black peaked cap.  Long sleeved khaki shirt can be substituted for the short sleeved khaki shirt.  Khaki pants may be substituted for black pants.  Black or khaki knee shorts may be substituted for black pants with a short sleeved shirt only.  Black dress shoes may be substituted for jackboots.  A black great coat or pea coat may be worn.
Service Uniforms are authorized for work, leave and liberty.

Winter Youth Uniform:
A short sleeved khaki shirt, black pants, black belt with silver buckle, black jackboots and socks with black beret.  Ribbons and badges are worn.  Aguillettes are optional.  Long sleeved khaki shirt can be substituted for the short sleeved khaki shirt.  Khaki pants may be substituted for black pants.  Black or khaki knee shorts may be substituted for black pants with a short sleeved shirt and no jacket only.   A long sleeved white trimmed, black coat with standing collar may be worn with black pants only.  A khaki coat may be worn with pants only.  Black dress shoes may be substituted for jackboots.  A white beret may be substituted for black.  A black great coat or pea coat may be worn.
Winter Youth Uniforms are authorized for youth in school, leave or liberty.

Summer Youth Uniform:
A short sleeved white shirt, white pants, white belt with silver buckle, black jackboots and socks with white beret.  Ribbons and badges are worn.  Aguilletes are optional.  Long sleeved white shirt can be substituted for short sleeved white shirt.  Black pants may be substituted for white.  White or black knee shorts may be substituted for white pants with short sleeved shirt and no jacket only.  A long sleeved black trimmed, white coat with standing collar may be worn with pants only.  Black dress shoes, white jackboots or white dress shoes may be substituted for black jack boots.  A black or white great coat or pea coat may be worn.
Summer Youth Uniforms are authorized for youth in school, leave and liberty.

Working Uniform:
A black long sleeve work blouse, dark grey undershirt, bloused up black work pants, black belt with silver buckle, black boots and socks with black eight point cover. Black mock turtle neck may be worn under the work blouse. Black parka, with or without liner or the black liner may be worn over the blouse. Black garrison cap may be substituted for black eight point cover. No work blouse is required in hot climates.
Working Uniforms are authorized for work, school, leave and liberty.

Coveralls:
Black coveralls, dark grey undershirt (dark grey is only required for shipboard inspections), socks and closed-toed underway shoes. Warm over-wear and covers are governed by command policy.
Coveralls are authorized for underway wear only.

Utility Uniforms:
There are numerous "utility uniforms" worn for a variety of situations. Each one is tailored for the job it is designed for and there are far too many to describe them all.
Utility Uniforms are authorized for doing the job they were designed for only.
