PostSubject: The Enemy of My Enemy   The Enemy of My Enemy Icon_minitimeFri Feb 21, 2014 1:20 am

Sith Academy, Malachor V
Darth Carnifex paced the Core of the Academy, troopers and various underlings lying in wait.

"Where are they? They should be back by now."
"Perhaps they got themselves killed, my lord," replied Carnifex's lieutenant, Magus Kurn. "You know how the sort of beings he went to are."
"No, we're not that lucky. It's utter madness, what they're trying..."
Because the universe likes doing this to people, at this moment, a familiar crack is heard as Darth Valefar steps out of a boom tube.
"Where is Thanatos?"
"He doubted the power of our new master. He said the Dark Side of the Force would overcome him. Our master disagreed."
"Your new master, not mine."
"Oh, you mean your little coup. Subtlety has never been your strong suit."
"But how?"
"Besides sensing your troops hiding? Because we are Sith. Betrayal is what we do. We have been splitting in our strategy for revenge for a long time. This was inevitable. Hmph. And predictable."
"Then lay down and die. I have you surrounded."
"Sigh. Did you really think I'd come back to an obvious trap without my own plans?" Valefar spreads his hands to his sides as a pair of ethereal swords materialize. "Parademons, attack! Mid Vur Shaan!"

At his call, dozens of boom tubes open up as armored flying demons, for lack of a better word, and attack the Sith troops. As their troops battle each other, the two remaining Lords of the Sith advance on each other, lightsaber clashing with daedric blade. The duel between the two masters of the Dark Side grew in intensity with each passing moment, until even their soldiers stopped fighting to watch. Lightning lashed out and flame spewed in return. Strong as Carnifex was in the Dark Side, the versatility of Valefar proved superior this day. With blades locked, Valefar gives a smile as he uttered the words, "Zun Haal Viik!" Carnifex was blown back as his lightsaber was torn from his hand, giving Valefar the opening he sought. In the blink of an eye, he plunged his bound sword into Carnifex's mouth and out the back of his neck.

A brutish figure among the parademons walks up and proclaims, "Your leader is dead. All hail Darth Valefar, the undisputed Lord of the Sith!"

"All hail Valefar! All hail Valefar!"

In the tumult of the shouting, Magus Kurn slipped away and crept into a small shuttle, hiding on one of Malachor's moons. As expected, the Sith vessels in the area began departing within hours, some going by boom tube. When he sensed that all had left, he returned to the Core to find Carnifex's body unceremoniously tossed aside.

"My lord, they have gone."
The corpse stirred as the wound began healing itself. "Bacta. Get me to bacta."
"We have some in the shuttle, my lord."
"Then take me to it. Gather what loyalist forces remain."
"My lord, we won't have enough to fight back and win. Not with Valefar's new backer."
"No, we won't." He looked up at the sky as he said, "It pains me to call for help but the enemy of my enemy..." His voice trailed off as he slumped over.
"Yes, my lord," sighed Kurn as he dragged his master to his shuttle.

Burnination
Three days after the failed coup, two dozen Sith warships appear in orbit over the planet. They hover ominously for a few minutes before a short four word message is broadcast. "We need to talk."

"I suppose pretending we're not here isn't a viable solution, then," Teresa mutters.

"Well it was until that broadcast," Thorgood responds.

Jenova rolls her eyes. They're like the children I never had, she thinks. All of them.

She picks up the comm. "Weakened as we may be, Sith, we will not surrender our good lives to you and yours," she responds. "What are you doing here?"

"To talk. We are not here to fight. At least not you and not now. We are here with a warning of things to come. I will explain in person. I will come to these coordinates alone. Darth Carnifex out." With that, the message ends. Sensors would detect a shuttle descending to a deserted area of the planet.

"Anything on that?"

"Unfortunately, most of us didn't deem the Sith the most important of things to keep in the database at all ti -"

"So you don't have anything on him?"

Thorgood sighs at being cut off, and nods curtly to Jenova. He hands her what appears to be a small, blue rock, which she fixes to her outer garments. At first, a green force-field appears around her body, near her skin. But then it fades and becomes invisible.

"Well I seem to recall that they're superstitious about teleportation for some reason. If anything happens, either start teleporting them back to their ship, or threaten to do so. Maybe they'd surrender. But for now, we just hope their intentions are as they say."

"I don't like the fact that there are so many ships orbiting," Teresa puts in.

Jenova shrugs. "What can we do about that?" Teresa nods, remaining seated. Nothing more is said aloud, for a moment, and...

Jenova is teleported to the destination before the shuttle arrives. Thankfully, there seem to be no 1st Pa'u Burninites around.

There is a great deal of steam as the shuttle door opens. Out steps a bald man, a little over two meters in stature, his gray skin scarred and cracked. He turns his eyes to Jenova, his tongue licking what appears to be fresh wounds on his cheeks. He puts his hand on his lightsaber and tosses it toward Jenova. A token gesture that he does not intend to fight. "As promised, I have come alone," he says in a voice that brings to mind nails on a chalkboard. "You may scan for cloaked soldiers if you wish but you will find none."

He gives a brief pause for her to do so. Regardless of if she does, he continues, "As much as it grates my pride, I have come to ask for aid. The Sith are in civil war between my forces and Darth Valefar's. We are losing and have been from the start. You may celebrate the loss of Sith but your joy will be short-lived. Valefar has gained a new ally. He has promised his new master what he has been seeking for millennia and if he gets it, the entire universe is in peril."

He actually sounds fearful as he speaks.

Jenova raises an eyebrow, and doesn't react to the tossed lightsaber. They shoot higher when the Sith requests help.

When he finishes speaking, there's a moment's pause.

Then, Jenova laughs. She doesn't point and laugh, to her credit, just throws her head back and laughs. As abruptly as she began, she stops, face once again becoming impassive.

"You're a fool, Sith, if you think a feigned honest plea will earn my trust. You may find it difficult to understand, but our failure to attempt to kill you does not entail that we don't dislike or distrust you. You will win nothing with vague gestures. My offering you help would require a very convincing reason. Very, very convincing. And even if convinced, we would offer you only certain types of aid -- certainly not military. There are others who might, but not us. Still, if you wish to plead your case, I am listening."

"And that is why we came to you. The others would have shot on sight."

He pulls out a small hologram projector and turns it on. It displays a helmeted humanoid figure wearing thigh-high boots and skin the texture of stone.

"His name is Darkseid, dread lord of Apokolips. You have seen his people's technology before. The boom tubes were stolen from them, the New Gods. He is locked in conflict with Highfather of New Genesis, stopped in name only by a treaty which exchanged their sons. He seeks something that he believes will give him an advantage over Highfather and allow him to remake the universe in his own image, something he believes resides in the consciousness of humanity: the Anti-Life Equation. It would allow him to enslave any listener and erase their free will. He has turned his attention to this galaxy and roped Valefar into serving him. Rumor from my spies in Valefar's camp says he killed Darth Thanatos with a glance, reduced him to nothing in an instant."

He clenches his fist in anger, crushing a nearby rock. "If you disregard us or call in aid to destroy us, so be it. We have served our purpose." He levitates a memory card, guides it to her, and turns away.

(OOC: Basically, you guys can have them killed if you want to but it's entirely optional. They'd be helpful for now but well, they're Sith. They're kind of betrayal-happy. I even gave Burn a copy of their dossier on the villain.)

"You've given me reason to believe that you're a fool, Sith, not to trust you. Why should I believe anything on that device?"

The memory card vanishes before it reaches Jenova, the telltale light of a Burninite teleporter briefly shining.

"Then don't. It will be my pleasure to kill you when he enslaves this world and everyone on it." He retrieves his lightsaber and returns to his shuttle. It flies back to his flag ship and the fleet departs.

--------------------
Motrax Bridge, twenty minutes later

"Fool! Did I not give you explicit orders to get dispose of the body?"
"You cannot speak to me like this! I am a son of Darkseid!"
"You are an idiot who is brought back from death only because he pities you."
"You dare accuse my father of such weakness?"
"I dare. I would have permanently destroyed any subordinate as incompetent as you."

Valefar turned and looked out the bridge window. The brute he berated took it as his chance to attack. Without turning around, Valefar clenched his fist, bringing the brute to his knees, clutching his nether regions.

"You truly are an idiot, Kalibak. Regardless , I still have purpose for you. I doubt even you can botch this mission."
"What is it?"
"You are to assist Jyn Fel in establishing an outpost on Earth."
"That pathetic backwater?"
Valefar tightened his grip. "That pathetic backwater has enough technology for this to work but not enough to pose a threat to our forces. In case you haven't noticed, Chiron is nearly as inhospitable as Apokolips and Rhea has a nearly impenetrable planetary shield. Burnination has been warned and Rutianas is far too strong for our task force. Do I need to go on?"
Kalibak shakes his head.
"Then go. Your target is the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant."

As Kalibak leaves, Valefar mutters, "Why could I not have been given Steppenwolf?"

(OOC: I may need to change the location since there are overlaps in territory between my other universe's NIR and this universe's Bismouth, namely much of Turkey and a strip of land stretching down to Egypt. Point is, I want to use NIR in this thread and there are conflicts that should be ironed out.)

(OOC: Oh, right. The gist of it is powers and abilities, with some other stuff about his forces. Darkseid, if he boom tubes to Earth or another class M, would stand around three meters tall. Boom tubes scale their travelers to whatever they'd be relative to the average humanoid. If he was to take the slow path to Earth, he'd be able to grab it in his hand. Carnifex wasn't exaggerating when he referred to Darkseid as a god. Besides the fact it'd take centuries to get to Apokolips through hyperspace, by the time you arrived, you'd be absolutely puny. As for how the square cube law doesn't cause you to squish yourself when you scale up, super tech stuff of gods is involved. He gets the usual brick stuff. More is detailed here. He will not be making an appearance until the very end of the RP, however, since he prefers using agents to fulfill his will and because I don't really want to do a bunch of posts of him just wrecking everything by himself.

He believes the collective mind of humanity contains most, if not all, pieces of the Anti-Life Equation, which is why he's taken an interest in this galaxy. His primary military force is made of parademons, which is what it sounds like. They are superhumanly strong and durable but dumb as a bag of rocks. Sort of like flying Super Mutants. That is essentially what's on that memory card. It does not, however, mention the radion thing.)

"In general, whenever this sort of thing happened," Teresa says, "it was always the Rutians who could solve it."

"By 'solve it,' child, you presumably mean possess the brute force to destroy all who stood in their way?" Jenova responds.

"She's right, you know," Thorgood says. "We should not allow this to simply remain in our hands."

"You speak of the Rheans."

"I do. They're not the Rutians, but they're not no one."

"I'd much rather deal with the Centauri," Jenova says. "At least some of their people are quite good."

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

The Centauri receive a missive with coordinates that says the Burninites are attempting a conversation with the Rheans, and a Centauri observer is invited.

The Rheans receive a missive with the same coordinates that asks them to send a diplomat, for the Burninites have information regarding the Sith which they wish to share.

Exiting the meeting chamber, Talent Zhang had just concluded diplomatic talks with leaders of various minor polities on the fringes of the Centauri sphere, to which she had presented the usual ultimatum of absorption or resettlement. Having all undergone heavy memetic pressure, most of them unsurprisingly chose absorption, although as always there was one stubborn polity that chose to be resettled. Nevertheless, the talks were a success, and just as she prepared to return to her office she received an urgent notification on her datapad. A high priority diplomatic message from the Burnites, urging her to... observe talks with the Rheans? From the message itself, there seemed to be absolutely nothing to deserve such high priority, but from her experience she found that more often than not there was. With a sigh, she headed out towards the Port Garland shuttle's terminal, and on her way there sent her diplomatic vessel, the Dag Hammarskjöld orders to prepare to set out to the coordinates she had received.

"The Sith? What would they know about the Sith?" asked Dmitri.
"I do not know, basileus, but perhaps they've been spotted operating in Burninite space. Our fleet has had no contact with them in nearly three months," replied Master Rand Ko, "and we have had no success in tracing where they could have gone."
"But why there?"
"Possibly because the Burninites suffered the least from their predations. Possibly because they jumped randomly. We'll have to ask, should we go to this."
"Hmm. Go, then, as my representative."
"You will not go?"
"I... have not been feeling well."
"Basileus?"
"I will be fine. Probably nothing too bad. Dismissed, Master Ko."
"As you command."

Within the hour, he arrives at the coordinates aboard the shuttle Tydirium.

Knowing of the Rheans' voodoo beliefs about teleportation, she does not offer them teleportation. But she does offer the Centauri.

In any case, upon the arrival of the emissaries, Jenova produces a holotape of her encounter with the Sith lord, and then plays the content of the memory card in full. Nothing redacted.

"We are unsure what to make of this event," Jenova says, "and we figured that Rhea would know the most about the Sith, and we prefer also dealing in more than one power at once, and prefer the Centauri as a counterbalance. In any case, I remain unconvinced of the veracity of any of this. It could easily be a ploy. But I have no idea."

An eyebrow remains raised throughout the presentation, and Talent Zhang replies, "In truth, I have little idea whether any of this is truth or not. The nature of these events seems a bit... beyond me. Alien gods? Anti-life equations? The destruction of the universe? I'm honestly rather incredulous, but then again we Centauri lack an understanding of such, ah, esoteric matters. Nevertheless, there is one thing we do understand."

Pausing for emphasis, she continues, "The Sith fleet's remnant in this sector is clearly weakened by infighting and internal division, which is certainly not a concept unfamiliar to us. As much as I know that this goes against your peoples' beliefs, Pa'u Jenova, the Centauri interest here is in the destruction of the remainder of the Sith fleet. Our military technology has advanced considerably, and the Sith pose an existential threat to the Governate, in fact one allowing it to form. A swift and decisive attack here would appease jingoist elements amongst the Spartans and be a display of our military power. Of course, that is only what we would want to do in a vacuum. I am certain that between the two of you there exists some kind of more advanced understanding that might suggest a better course of action. But know that based on what has been presented to me, this action is almost certainly the default."

Master Ko keeps his expression still as Talent Zhang speaks, trying to not show that he nearly soiled himself at the mention of Darkseid's name. Pausing to consider his words, he says, "There is half-truth in this Sith's claims. The New Gods are real, though we do not worship them. As he stated, we acquired the boom tube and the Mother Box from Apokolips, taken by a Rhean member of the Green Lantern Corps. While we have managed to duplicate some functions of the Mother Box, our versions are nothing but crude copies of the original."

After another pause, he continues, "On the topic of what to do with the Sith, however, I agree with my Centauri colleague. This Sith Lord could be lying and the idea of cooperating with him even if he is not is unwise. The enemy of my enemy can still be my enemy. Darkseid can keep. He is only a potential threat; the Sith are a confirmed one."

Jenova frowns at Zhang's words. Perhaps the Spartan element should be shifted memetically towards more civilized beliefs, she thinks but does not say.

"Master Ko, it has ever struck me as odd that your people fear becoming Sith, but the Sith seem never to convert the other way. Why is that? You know that our people will not aid you in taking the lives of others. If the Sith still utilize drone armies, or drone ships, we may assist you in their removal, but we cannot participate in any action that puts the lives of thinking and choosing beings at risk."

With a nod towards Master Ko, Talent Zhang replied, "Then, it seems that our goal is one and the same. Good to know. We will support you in any maneuvers you take against the Sith, and hope that we might expect the same in return."

Then, turning back towards Jenova, she continues, "If you do not wish to participate in military action against the Sith, that is your prerogative. I will not question that choice, nor will our superiors, but the time to act is clearly now."

Speaking to Jenova, he says, "We can discuss philosophy later. Regardless, we appreciate the assistance."

He pulls out a small disc and pushes a button, displaying a holographic map of the galaxy. "As you already know, this map displays the major hyperspace routes from the various major civilizations of this galaxy." He pushes another button. "What I now show you are several of the lesser known hyperspace lanes from Burnination, including ones we know of from recovered Sith archives. While there is a chance they have taken an entirely unexplored lane, I do not believe it likely, given the dangers. Therefore, there are any of a dozen smaller lanes from Burnination that they could have taken. The most likely are these three here, which lead to systems on the outer rim of the galaxy, where they are out of the way."

He turns again to Jenova, "I propose we assemble our fleets and begin searching from here, if your government does not object. Any questions?"

(OOC: Basically, Sela's galactic map, with the trade routes as major hyperspace lanes. Since the two major ones from Burnination lead through Rutian and Rhean space, those aren't likely.)

Jenova shrugs. "If your opinion is that now is not the time for truth, then so be it. There is nothing I can offer you. I brought this to your attention because of the supposedly important information about this Darkseid creature. Had I known it would lead to a witch hunt, I would not have done it.

"You may ask for our help if you find yourselves fighting drone armies. Otherwise, there is nothing I can offer you."

(OOC: Thanks for giving me a way to bring the plot back on track. Well, I'd have figured out a way to bring it back on track anyway but yay. Not that wrecking Carnifex wasn't part of the plot. I just figured we'd get to him later.)

"Luther... ah, Johan Luther? He's certainly not on Chiron, if that's what you're asking. He last visited the Spartans some few months ago, which I believe was all over the Spartan NewsLinks for a while, but he left for uncharted territory. I'd imagine he's out there somewhere fighting the Sith in one way or another, but I certainly don't have any idea myself. I could possibly ask Santiago to contact him on our behalf. Nevertheless, for now, I believe that our priority should be establishing intelligence on the Sith fleets and their civil war, to see if any weaknesses can be exploited. We are willing to commit a significant probe effort to this, and hope that it might be reciprocated."
