With that, he picks up his helmet and walks over to where he was last spotted, searching for any tracks or scent to help. If that doesn't help, he tries to see if his helmet's visuals are back online.

In any case, the Bastian's equipment is functioning, and so is its sense of smell. But by golly, the scent and trail just vanish into nothing at the gate. Like they were transported somewhere else. Come to think of it, there is a sort of energy residue there...

He gestures to the rest of the group to come. Once they arrive, he says, "My equipment and senses detect that though their scent and tracks disappear here, there is some sort of energy residue in the area. Not even they can violate conservation of mass and energy, it seems. Perhaps there is an energy trail we can follow."
