PostSubject: Old Enemies, new problems   Old Enemies, new problems Icon_minitimeSat Jan 25, 2014 12:15 pm

*The Ordenreich has radically changed since the Hildenburen wars. Some of the changes are good, some are bad but no one can argue that the relatively young civilization had a dominant position in the affairs of the Korel system. At first, the Ordenreich focused on military power to exert its influence but they discovered that it took a lot of effort for little gain. That is when the Ordenreich switched to an economic focus after the Hildenburen war. The Ordenreich sat on lucrative trade routes between many other Korel civilizations and its earlier focus on military supremacy meant that they could guarantee good protection for the merchants moving through their territory. This combined with the Ordenreich's free trade policy meant that the Ordenreich reached a new economic golden age. However, in order to achieve this new era of prosperity, they had to leave behind some of their older traditions and lines of thought to achieve this new found wealth. Many people pushed hard to regain these old values and some even fought for it. As a result, many different factions sprang up in the Ordenreich to return to these old ideas. Most of these groups were disorganized, small, and quickly crushed whenever they made a move so they weren't too worry. However, one day, one of these groups made a move that would start a chain of events that could threaten everything the Ordenreich achieved.*

----------------------

{Ordenreich-Burnination Trade Route, 8 lightyears away from Burnreich Bazaar and Deep Spaceport}

*Normally this trade lane is very quite but today was different. Radio transmissions and rumors on the Burnreich B&DSP would suggest that a large Burninite trade fleet was just ambushed by what seemed like pirates using state of the art equipment and tactics. By the time the local Ordenreich anti-piracy flotilla arrived on seen there was nothing left save for the gutted wrecks of Burninite trade ships. The Flotilla scanned for escape pods but there were none detected*

This is a very unlikely problem. For all the Burninites' apparent cockiness and unwillingness to use force, some of their feelings are justified. They possess the best shielding technology in the galaxy, and boast a FTL system that is nigh untraceable. They can even stay in an alternate universe for an extended period of time to escape detection and capture. Sensor systems are also top of the line, making it near impossible to sneak up on them. They can cloak, for God's sake.

So, when it comes right down to it, a few pirates shouldn't bother them at all. A laughing matter, really.

What could have gone wrong? There are a few queries from sensor command at low level to the Ordenreich port, but the Burninites don't seem to have discovered this just yet.

*At the ambush site*

*The Ordenreich fleet had been investigating the ambush site for three hours now with little progress as the debris was small and offered very little evidence to suggest who attacked. After three hours though they managed to find a sizable chunk of what was clearly a Burninite trade ship and sent some knights to board it. The knights had to wear full combat suits as the ship was completely gutted and therefore had no atmosphere. On the ship the knights tried to find out what had happened but there wasn't much to work with. After a few minutes of searching though they managed to discover a Burninite crew member on board. The Burninite has horribly charred and had clearly died when the ship was destroyed but the nature of the burns is what the Ordenreich knights found alarming. They bagged the body to return it to an Ordenreich ship with a med lab for further study and sent a message to O.S.S.C. Livenstein. In the message, they attached two pictures, one picture was taken by a frigate and it showed the destroyed, burned chunk of Burninite trade ship that had the body on board and the second picture was of the Burninite corpse found on board. After seeing the images O.S.S.C. sent a frigate out with a Paladin Komtur on board to oversee the investigation and they also forwarded the message to the Burninites.*

*Upon the arrival of the Burninite vessel they were hailed by the Flotilla who were investigating the the raid*

Greyson: This is Order Captain Greyson, T.S.F. Forlorn Hope, 312th Anti-Piracy Flotilla. Burninite ship, what we have found out is too urgent for us to exchange pleasantries. Please send your representative to the Forlorn Hope immediately. An Order Knight will be in the hanger waiting to escort you to our medical and tech lab bays.

"Very well," returns Jenova's voice. "But you'll find escort unnecessary. I'll appear outside your tech lab in a few minutes."

True to her word, Jenova will beam just there.

*On board the Forlorn Hope, teams of Order Scribes were tirelessly pouring over the information gathered by the salvage teams and throughly examining the wreck and corpse. The lead Order Scribe was deep in focus with his notes when Jenova warped on board. Upon warping, the head scribe was so startled he fell over taking his chair and many of his notes with him.*

Head Scribe Noble: Jesus! Don't do that!

Greyson (on intercomm): Scribe Noble, is there a problem?

Noble: No sir... the Burninites merely almost killed me from a heart attack

Greyson: Noted. Get them up to speed. Greyson out.

*Noble took a second to gather up his notes, smooth out his robes, and try to regain some kind of composure before speaking*

Noble: *Ahem* Well... I am Head Scribe Noble, Project lead for finding out what happened here. Seeing as you seem to be in a rush... doing that warp you do... I'll get right down to it. Follow me.

Jenova grins. Amusing that they didn't inform the scribe of Jenova's intention to beam in there. A practical joke perhaps, using her as the stick, perhaps? She files this bit of information away, smoothing her face to avoid antagonizing the scribe unnecessarily.

"I apologize, scribe," Jenova says, "I assumed your people would have informed you. But in any case, it was they who bid hurry. I am curious to see what you have, but I do not question that the Goddess will see justice done. Justice will be done whether I am hurried or measured. Lead away."

Noble: Very well. This way.

*Noble led Jenova to the med lab where the dead Burninite was located. Along the way he grabbed a datapad and typed on it a little bit before handing it to Jenova*

Noble: This is the complete report from our investigation. What we found was a very alarming. According to the autopsy of the Burninite crew member, the crewmen suffered burns that are normally associated with the Talcyon weaponry used on the ships of the Centauri. Before you go pointing figures at them though we also did a survey of the wrecks and found a combination of Talcyon weapons damage and Ordenreich kinetic damage. This can only mean two things: we are dealing with a group that has access to both our weapons or there is a group out there that has modified ships to carry both, both are equally terrifying. In addition, the power on said weapons has to have been increased significantly to defeat your shield technology quickly. Secondly, based off numbers given by your government, these raiders had to be fast, extremely fast to catch your ships before they could jump. This theory is supported by the fact that none of your ships made it and it doesn't seem like they were even given a chance to put up a fight. Lastly, we should note we are most likely not dealing with pirates. Based off the wreckage, no attempt was made to capture the trade vessels intact. All trade ships were completely destroyed.

Jenova frowns. "Much of what you say should be impossible, unless they have a hold of some kind of Alterro Device. Which is tech unknown to even yourselves and the Centauri.

"Have you any method of discovering the origins of these weapons?"

Noble: None really. I will say that the talcyon weapons are nothing the Ordenreich has. We managed to recreate the Centauri weaponry on a weaker level using element zero but if that was the type of weapon used on your trade ships there would have been an eezo residue left behind. No, whoever owns these weapons is very well funded and has access to black markets well outside the Ordenreich sphere of influence

Meanwhile, The Spotlight has been busy attempting to find the signs of FTL travel. All the major systems leave a trace, and the Burninites hope to use their advanced sensory equipment to determine which type of FTL transport was used (to identify the nationality of the attackers, and maybe even the direction they traveled).

*The Burninite ship would have detected trace amounts of eezo which pointed definitely towards the Ordenreich preferred of transportation but something about the eezo was off. It seemed to have been treated differently than eezo used by the Ordenreich military and civilian sectors. The Burninite ship would be able to detect the difference but depending on Burninite understanding of eezo they may or may not know what to make of it.*

*As Noble was about to run another test he got a call over the intercom from Order Captain Greyson*

Greyson: Scribe Noble, send Miss Jenova to the bridge, give her a guide to show the way. Her presence is needed on the bridge. Tell her another flotilla found another one of her ships and this one is relatively intact. We are heading there now.

Noble: Yah Order Captain. Miss Jenova you get that?

"Indeed. I hardly think leading is necessary, but lead away."

Jenova's commlink buzzes, and she checks it on the way. Of this new information, however, she so far says nothing.

*Jenova reached the deck just as Order Captain Greyson's Flotilla dropped out of slipspace. In space everyone could see a small Ordenreich flotilla flying lazily around a Burninite trade vessel that was dead in the water. Greyson contacted the Flotilla.*

Greyson: This is Order Captain Greyson, 312th Anti-Piracy Flotilla, responding to transmission. Identify.

Flotilla Order Captain: This is the 402nd Ordenreich Scout Flotilla. We are standing by.

Greyson: Understood. As the primary investigators, my command will be taking over the investigation of this trade ship. Report findings…

Flotilla Order Captain: Understood sir. There isn't much to report on this one sir. The trade ship has no visible signs of battle damage. There are a few markings that coincide with Ordenreich boarding craft that attached themselves to the ship's hull but thats it. Another important note is that there is nothing in the ship.

Greyson: Nothing? What do you mean nothing?

Flotilla Order Captain: I mean, sir, that the ship has been completely gutted. All electronics, personal decor, engines, power systems, even the bodies. Its all gone.

Jenova nods. "Sophisticated. Sophisticated, but stupid. One does not simple steal Burninite technology without repercussion. Assuming that the perpetrators have yet to blow themselves up with it, I believe that we can locate them using methods we would prefer not to disclose to your government.

"However, I wish to speak with a higher ordering authority in your government before I offer that recommendation to the people who will follow me. I'm sure you know of our opinion on your zeal for the destruction of evil doers. Even now."

Jenova's eyes pass over the gruesome evidence again. "Especially now," she says more quietly

*Greyson nodded then proceeded to contact the Order Admiral of the fleet his flotilla was attached to. After some inaudible discussion and possibly some cursing the conversation was over and Greyson finally turned around.*

Greyson: My commanding officer has agreed to pass this up the chain to the Hierarchy. He wasn't happy but after I presented him with what we uncovered he agreed that this investigation was well above his pay grade. It will take a few minutes but we should have a Paladin Komtur or even the Hochmeister on the horn soon.

*As Greyson finished speaking the comm went off and Greyson answered it.*

Flotilla Order Captain: Sir, apologies but our men discovered something that we overlooked from our first investigation of the gutted trade ship. You might want to look at this…

*An image came up. It was grainy and clearly taken by the helmet cam of one of the soldiers walking vacuum through the trade ship looking for evidence. The image was clear enough, however, to show an insignia on a piece of cloth that looked like it was ripped off of the uniform it was originally apart of. This insignia showed the Ordenreich eagle on it but it was different in that instead of the fiery crescent underneath the eagle it has a gold cross in the background. Order Captain Greyson was old enough to know that symbol and what it represented as he was a green Order Knight when they were in power.*

Greyson: The Black Order...

"You've found evidence on a ship that was completely gutted with nothing left aboard? That's suspicious in and of itself," Jenova comments. But she offers no further intrusion into the workings of the ship. She merely awaits her conversation with the highest commanding power, wondering what form of promise that if she could recover her property and maybe people without causing harm to their captors she could exhort from the righteous but overzealous Ordenreich people.

Greyson: Its probably a calling card. The Black Order wants it to know its them… wait…

*Greyson looked at the screen showing the Burninite trade ship and quickly got on the comms*

Greyson: THIS IS ORDER CAPTAIN GREYSON, GET AWAY FROM THE TRADE SHIP GET THE FU…

*Suddenly the trade ship exploded taking all the soldiers on it and half the scout flotilla with it*

Greyson: DAMNIT! Those bastards aren't fit to be considered human!

As the ship is exploding, the Burninites manage to beam 4 Ordenreich soldiers aboard their vessel before they are killed. Despite their advanced locking tech, they're not able to save any more than that. Certainly none of the war material.

*The Order Captain was still fuming even as the Burninites managed to bring some of the now destroyed fleets soldiers on board. He sighed as he calmed down*

Greyson: *sigh* Thank you really. Saving soldiers of the Order will not go unrewarded. Now then, I believe I owe you a transmission to our Hierarchy. I'll take you to the comm room so we can discuss this privately.

*The Order Captain and Burninites went to the comm room which was right next door and after Greyson pressed a few buttons an Ordenreich middle aged woman appeared on the projector. She was reading a data pad before looking up*

Greyson: Paladin Komtur Maya, ma'am. Order Captain Greyson reporting as ordered. I brought the Burninite ambassador.

Maya: So I see… Jenova Incinerator. Never thought I would see you again. I suppose I don't need an introduction. I was just tasked to take over the investigation especially since we're dealing with the Black Order. I am sure you have questions and I will answer them but before you start, I know Burninite's disposition towards violence and I'll tell you right now the Black Order are sadists. Especially towards non-humans such as yourself. There is little to no hope of a peaceful negotiation.

Jenova bows respectfully towards Paladin Maya. "I face the unfortunate evidence of the truth of your words, my friend. And I am aware that you would only be annoyed were we to request that you act that way.

"So my request is one which, hopefully, is one you will be more amenable to. Firstly, we have methods of locating the Black Order, assuming they still have our technology or any surviving people. We prefer not to disclose our methods, given the obvious military applications of being able to track Burninites, even whilst cloaked. But if we find them for you, we ask that you simply allow us to beam out our own people before any fighting begins.

"The Pa'us have advised that I also ask if we may simply begin beaming up members of the Black Order into holding cells aboard your vessel -- an entirely risk-free method of capturing them all -- in return for an oath not to pursue their deaths by trial, but any form of lesser punishment. I advised against making this offer, given that I believe you'll find such an oath cumbersome and wish to pursue your version of justice.

"In any case, we may find that they have discovered countermeasures to our teleportation and we may find that beaming out our people is impossible. But we wish to try rescuing them peacefully before the Goddess has a chance to construe our actions as allowing violence to occur on our behalf.

"Also, I wish to thank you personally for the Ordenreich's swift and decisive response on this. While my people may seem odd and unappreciative of your response or even display hostility towards your choice of methods, I assure you that under this, they are quite grateful. Were they not shocked and horrified by the circumstance, they may have made it more known to your people. They may yet, when the time comes.

"But anyway, what say you?"

*Maya let Jenova finish before speaking*

Maya: Well, while the Ordenreich does have an interest in your people's technology we won't demand it. We'll follow your lead when it comes to tracking since its your technology and any Burninite tech we recover is yours to take. I also agree that your people should be beamed first. The Black Order might torture them simply for the sick pleasure so we need to get them out of their hands as quickly as possible. On the subject of beaming we have to go under the assumption that the Black Order has developed a countermeasure. My department has been tasked for a long time to hunt down the Black Order remnants and every time we encountered them they had reversed engineered other people's equipment. I already lost more than my fair share of men to reverse engineered Centauri talcyon lasers. This is probably why they hijacked your trade ships in the first place. In any case, I have begun assembling a task force to aid you as you go after the Black Order. They will join up with the Flotilla you are currently aboard and they will follow your lead as you go about this. These soldiers you are receiving have been trained to be hyper lethal killers but they also have top of the line discipline. They will not attack unless you order it. Also don't apologize for your people's ways. We of the Ordenreich have learned where the Black Order has not. There are many different races in the galaxy, all with different beliefs and natures. We must learn to respect and coexist with these differences if we are to thrive as a people. This rift between the Black Order and Ordenreich is merely a physical reminder of the violent nature our people have and how we struggle against it

Jenova nods, making minimal effort to hide a smile. "That is quite an enlightened position, friend."

"You should probably order your people to stay with us -- as close as they dare without risking ship to ship collisions. We will be going through the Warp, and it's treacherous, and your hyperdrives can't get you in or out. So stay very close. But also, don't think of allowing your soldiers to await my orders or the order of any Burninite. Even Teresa Trimbalt, the one your datalinks will list as a convert of sorts, will be unable to utter a command to attack. It will be quite clear to your people when ours have finished our salvage. But we will be unable to order an attack."

Jenova closes her eyes for a moment, then reopens them. "I have just ordered the location efforts to begin. Are there any other matters of coordination to discuss?"

(OOC: 'Location efforts' details -- obviously, your story, so you get to decide whether they're successful and how accurate any info they might get is --
1: Psychic attempts -- Burninites are connected mentally via a sort of latent hivemind, which is how the Dark Burninites have always been able to find them, and how Slaaneesh did as well, if you have read those threads. Most Burninites are close to each other in space. Any small groups far away from the main body are likely to be pinpointed to which star they're nearest by this method, though likelihood of this being successful is less as distances increase.
2: Tech attempts -- Burninite tech has a sort of 'footprint' in The Warp, the parallel universe that the Burninites travel through and often get power from. Distances and time are distorted there; small distances in The Warp are quite large distances in the physical world, and long times in the Warp are quite short in the physical world. Standard scans of The Warp might turn up uses of Burninite tech that are separated in space from the main body of Burninites. Of course, this method has a random probability of success; even though distances are smaller, The Warp is a big place.)

*{This is for after my character speaks} The tech attempt doesn't yield much results as the trade ships were stripped for parts and transported back using Ordenreich slipspace which would have been incapable to Burninite detection methods. The Ordenreich would do its own scan but the Black Order had become very good at masking their destination by making random jumps into slipspace before heading to their actual destination. The psychic attempts were surprising very accurate as the Black Order did not go very far. The Black Order had a secret base right under the Ordenreich's nose though based off its location and remoteness it most likely wasn't the main base*

Maya: Very well. I just dispatched a task force to rendezvous with the flotilla you're on. They will integrate themselves with whatever fleet you see fit to dispatch. They will stay as close as possible to your ships when you transit to the Warp. I will also be personally leading the fleet so I'll give you operational priority as it is your people we are trying to save and I'll use my own discretion on combat actions but I'll make sure I will only do it if every other attempt is exhausted. I will be the last to arrive which should be about an hour from now
