So I was just curious as to how all of you achieve faster than light travel. This isn't really relevant to any RP but I just thought about it and thought it would be nice for everyone to explain how they go about beating the speed of light.

So the way the Hive does it is they use a slipspace drive which creates a portal into the slipspace dimension, a place where the speed of light increased to near infinity thereby allowing all other objects to speed up much more than they would normally as well as being void of time. The way it works is a slipspace drive is connected to a railgun or other large weapon within a ship. The slipspace drive then fires two particles at nearly the speed of light. When these collide they create a blackhole. The drive then repeates this twice more, all three actions taking place near instantaneously. When these three blackholes eat one another it breaks time at that point. This point where time is broken becomes a slipspace portal. A laser then makes the portal grow large enough for the ship to fit through. The angle at which the particles making up the three black holes are fired determines where the exit point will be.

+High speed FTL travel
+Stable system
+Can be used as a weapon

-Not instantaneous
-The ships fuel is still used when travelling in the Slipspace
-Only large ships with railguns can carry slipspace drives
-When the drive is destroyed a slipspace rupture occurs (a large wormhole opens up into the slipspace pulling things into it)
-Easily detectable because of the energy signature that builds up before exit.

So what is your way of travel?

(Oh and btw I'll reply to the Contact: The Hive thread tomorrow, I just didnt have enough time today, which is why I put what time I did have into posting this)

Our drives open a wormhole to a parallel universe wherein time passes VERY slowly and we can move a very short distance, but when the wormhole is reopened, we may have crossed the galaxy in seconds.

- Speed/reliability/simplicity

- Complication of drive
- Cannot transport while cloaked
- Requires calculation
- Can be disrupted by an Alterro device

We use a version of the Alcubierre drive. How it works is basically that it creates two opposite regions of contracting and expanding space-time in front of it and behind of it (shown here), which propels the middle forward.

+ Easily controlled due to being in "real" space
+ Instantly begins once activated
+ OOC: Based on a real theory on FTL travel

- Slower than some other methods
- Being in "real" space, it can be detected in transit, but with some difficulty

Star Wars hyperdrive.

+ Highly reliable
+ Very fast, albeit not instantaneous
+ Routes can be adjusted mid-journey, though it can be dangerous
+ Pursuit is difficult once inside

+ Needs routes calculated beforehand for safety reasons
+ Can be yanked out by large enough gravity wells
+ Failure of stasis fields will result in showing up at the wrong time
+ Pursuit is difficult once inside

It can be used as a weapon. There was one incident during the Clone Wars where a ship had a hyperdrive malfunction and crashed into a planet, pretty much destroying it.

Veridian Hyperdrive technology is based on hyperdrives used in the Stargate series. Basically the hyperdrive allows a vessel to open a subspace window and move into hyperspace. The ones the Veridians currently have is actually based on technology found in an Alien ship that crashed on Veridia Prime's sole moon many years before Veridians finally made the first manned flight to space. Taken by the government, its been kept a secret and the technology developed from reverse engineering what was found on the ship is publicly of sole Veridian design.

-Has the potential to be as efficient as other FTL drives used in the galaxy
-With the right power source, can traverse a galaxy relatively quickly, even make intergalactic travel easy.

-Veridians don't possess a power source that can utilize the potential of the technology.
-Veridians current power source is Naquadria, which is highly unstable. Veridians have made some progress to make it a viable resource, but they still have some way to go.

The Dominion naturally continues to experiment with the technology. Of course as they work on this technology, they are also utilizing what FTL drives they can buy from Kuat Drive Yards. Veridians are also working on wormhole drive or well, they will, in the future.

The Aurelians utilize a simple array of solar-powered warp gates which forge an Einstein-Bose space time bridge between two points via magnetic induction of biologically-replicated exotic matter formed from accelerator-like organisms.

-The actual crossing-over between warp points is near-instantaneous.
-Warpgates only need to be prepared once in a stable star system, provided of course that the solar flowers are of sufficient size to eliminate any need for a "recharge" or "down" time.

- ... but vessels will have to actually fly to the ring before they are warped between systems...
- ... but also require a sleeper vessel to deploy a warpgate in a new system.
- Inconvenience. Unlike warp drive-enabled vessels which can leave at will to any system, Aurelian vessels require a series of warpgates for efficient travel between systems, thereby prolonging journey times.
