PostSubject: Yet Another New Map   Thu Apr 26, 2012 10:36 am

Alright guys, I have yet another new map that should serve us well with our new members. However, I still lack some information and I need the following:

The location and number of planets of Veridia Prime
The number of planets of Grandon Prime
The location and number of planets of Delt

The lack of planets in the Sith space is intentional, by the way, because there is no way I am going to do all those dots Razz

You could actually ditch it in favor of a much smaller oval. They really have maybe one planet secured now where they're hunkering down.

So the dots are all supposed to be planets? Would it not be better to do them as solar systems since you could have multiple planets in one system.

I'm pretty sure that they are supposed to be systems, but generally there's not much more than one inhabited planet in each of the systems so I just tend to call them planets.

Ah I see. I have planned to fully exploit every planet available.

Anyway Could you map those 3 cloud/bubble areas southwest of panzersharkcat that is between the two arms (they are the clouds that are somewhat seperated from the arms). Name it The Hive. Litter the area with 23 dots. Its alright if they are somewhat clustered together.

I am trying to decide upon a population as well and I am having a bit of trouble deciding how many Ahlgrens (that is what I am going to call them) will fit on a planet. Now these things are like ants, only a lot larger. Workers are about 1 ft big, soldiers are about 4 ft. and Princesses are 5ft (the queens become bloated and large because of the number of larva they give birth to so they are much bigger). I'm thinking that you could fit at least 15 billion of these guys (especiially since most are workers) on a planet comfortably with good food supplies. Should that be more or less? I am leaning towards more but I cannot decide.

I don't know. We tend to go by in-game numbers outside of the PT and MT/PMT worlds, where we shrink them down.

I guess you could probably could fit several billions of the workers on one planet, and I wouldn't mind that all too much because I assume that they would both consume less resources and be less productive than the average human. However, I'd like suggest is that you base the number of your soldiers on your in-game population - probably 5% or so at most. The reason I suggest this is because the number of soldiers in all of our armies are based on our reported in game populations and it would only be fair if you were held to the same guidelines concerning military sizes as us. In addition, your reported population would also have to be the one we use for military reports, because again it would only be fair if you were held to the same guidelines. It can be fairly easily justified as it can be easily said that they only are productive as however many humans your reported population is.

Also, the update map:

That many systems? I suppose we could say you escaped the attention of the Sith by not being particularly attractive to them as something to conquer. That, or, we retcon you in as part of the grand alliance against them.

I think the escaping attention thing makes the most sense without doing yet another alteration to our already heavily retconned canon. I can't imagine that they would have that much of interest to the Sith.

Burnination was just destroyed, remember? Still in the aftermath of that RP I believe. Don't remember if we finished beating the Dark Burninites.

But in any case, you're going to have to remove Burnination, because it's going to be totally on Craftworlds soon.

Uhh, let's just pretend that I didn't put it on because it's practically impossible to remove anything on the map without starting completely from scratch again Razz

You should download a program like GIMP so you can keep everything you do in the maps in layers so when you have to delete it you simply delete that layer and your done.

That is unfortunate that numbers are based on the NS populations, really strains the RP. However, I will adhere to it. Most Ahlgrens are workers, however most of this population is used up in construction. There is a large portion that works agriculturally, but only enough to support the population (probably the major flaw in the Ahlgren system. They are constantly expanding making room for more food but there population expands at such a rate that they constantly need more food. So really the Ahlgrens are quite a bit less productive than humans because of the high birth rate.

As for military... a certain portion of the population needs to be military. On average a thousand Ahlgren are born in one day by one Queen. About 200 of those are born with a soldiers body. Go any lower and its too unrealistic for a small/new colony (would be more relevant if you think of this before they were sentient). Go higher and you burden the colony with either too few females or too few workers. So the number of military can't change without getting unrealistic. I believe this can be solved in a couple ways, either most of the military stays near colonies and protects them from natural dangers, or they rely not so much on superior technology and try to overwhelm with numbers (I lean towards this). So for example the Ahlgren could be invading an alien planet. The fighter jets roar overhead and take out targets on ground and in air. However the main force would just be armed Ahlgren (which in a future tech world, would be fairly easy to kill).

The second option would add strategy to any Rp with the Hive as anybody fighting them would always be extremely outnumbered. They would have to RP superior tactics and technology to defeat Hive armys.

EDIT: Oh and as for the Sith, they could have just seen us as insignificant being that we do appear to be bugs. Or it could have been they never found us. Since Ahlgrens only work and recreational things such as TV, music, and everything that sends out signals is nearly non-existant. The only signals are FTL signals sent by the Royal Caste ensuring that everything is running smoothly everywhere else.

The main reason we use NS numbers is because we want to have some kind of objective base to work on for comparing military power in terms of statistics. I understand why you'd take issue with it but numbers come up really very rarely and it's not something that very commonly intrudes into our RP. We don't really tend to say "oh you can't do this because of your in-game stats".

As for soldiers, I guess I can roll with that, though I'm not so sure what the others will say. What you're trying to do is very different, so I guess we'll have to see how it works.

Unless you want to go with SDNW5 rules, where numbers are decided by dice* but that kind of ruins the point of the whole NationStates bit.

*25 + 2d6, to be precise, to get a number of Nation Creation Points, or NCP. One home sector is worth 7 NCP and is about 50 billion people and 14000 GDP, which is fairly arbitrary measurement in itself. Smaller numbers for smaller sectors. The Bastian Star Empire in SDNW5 is a fairly powerful empire, with 35 NPCs, but 9 of them are in trade routes. It makes them a fantastically wealthy empire but is heavily dependent on trade being regular and don't have a very large population, compared to the others.

Or, you know, we can make up numbers from nowhere but that of course has its own set of problems. I assure you, Delt, our system works well enough - we've never really had any problems with stats intruding into narrative.

Even without GIMP, Sela, you get the initial picture you started with, copy the PART of the picture with nothing on it that Burnination is on, and paste it OVER the real map with Burnination on it, essentially clearing Burnination from the map.

So you can do it :p.

And yes, in game stats are just for basic comparison -- as in, you can't claim that the Bastian Dominion will beat Rutianas in a war.

Yeah, generally reported military stats matches up the amount of the military power we choose for the nation to have anyways.

Also, I copped out with your former territory, see it below:

The new guys are going to have a pretty low population density for a long time.

You know I was thinking and could we perhaps make a topic for personal maps and link it to this map here? This way we could go into more detail about our nations. The maps would have to be the same as the big map here (in terms of where everyone's systems are) but things could be added such as the name of individual system names and even their significance.

That would be perfectly fine. I think some of us have done maps of our inhabited planets, and I know Rutianas has information on a lot of her planets on the NSwiki, but I don't think anyone has really bothered to do a map of our systems per se because most of us really only control one or two.

It's better if you do it, because that way you can edit it more easily and update the map.
